Women writers

My project is concerned with the lives and works of women writers in the twentieth century.

The project is to be seen as a celebration of women's writing and also an attempt to see the individual writers and their works in a larger context of general world history, politics and the history of women and women’s liberation.

What I aimed to do was to place the writers’ personal life and work in relation to both history and also the status of women in society in the period of time and country they were living in. It is meant to give a perspective of the role of the woman as writer and/or artist in the last century.

The main focus of the project is ten selected writers from different world parts and cultures, living and writing in different decades of the twentieth century. I have mapped their life spans, travels, writing themes and publication history and also added an element of expressing their works through typography, illustration or other imagery. Research into literature, publishing, history and details about the writers’ lives and journeys was also a significant part of the project.
